Meet the coaches

Helen Innes

Senior Consultant

Helen is a Senior Consultant and coach who spent 25 years in the Australian Public Service including 11 years at the Senior Executive level. Commencing her career in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and working most of her career in the Employment portfolio, she has since worked on many complex public policy issues, including social services, women’s workforce participation, homelessness, disability and migration. Helen also worked as First Assistant Secretary, People and Communications before retiring from the APS in early 2020. Helen has worked with Executive Intelligence Group undertaking recruitment management and search assignments for the past two years and is also co-director of a coaching and training company, Metis.

Dawn Casey

Dawn has over 21 years’ experience to Division head (Band 2 level) in the Australian Public Service (APS) across a range of portfolios. Her international aid experience includes two years working for AusAID in the Solomon Islands. Dawn has a background in implementing the government’s agenda in social policy, economic reform, marketing and strategic change management. Her strengths include delivering on strategic imperatives and achieving results through people. Dawn has undertaken the role of coach, mentor and facilitator for staff at Senior Executive and middle management levels for a number of years and she has a solid understanding of public sector culture, its context and environment. Since establishing her consulting business in 2010 Dawn has undertaken a large number of projects. She has achieved Level 3 Coaching accreditation with the Institute of Executive Coaching. Her coaching work has primarily been with Senior Executive Service (SES) staff, managers and departmental officers within the APS and has a focus on building leadership and people management capabilities, developing high performing teams and successfully managing career progression and transition. She has also coached people to resolve team conflict in the workplace and to address complex staff management issues.

Jeremy Chandler

Jeremy works primarily with APS clients between EL2 and SES 2. He also work with clients in other public service jurisdictions, the private sector and the not-for-profit sector.

In supporting clients, he draws on his former experience working at SES levels in the APS. He also draws on the experience and insights from the high-level management consulting work he continue to do across a range of organisations. Coaching clients frequently value that that he brings contemporary understanding of the complex business environments within which they work and the challenges they confront as leaders.

Many clients look for support in positioning themselves for promotion and for interview preparation. Others commonly seek support during stages of transition in their career or organisation. Development of leadership skills is a frequent area of focus.

Cathy Mauk

Cathy began her formal work as a trained coach in 2007, having provided support and advice to APS managers and executives as well as private sector and not-for-profit CEOs for many years through her management consulting practice. As a consultant, a facilitator and a coach she has drawn on her diverse background as a lawyer, a senior manager, a business owner, a university lecturer and tutor, a health professional and a writer. Cathy has a solid understanding of the environment and culture of the APS gained through seventeen years of providing strategy development; policy, program and structural reviews; business improvement; project management; change management; tendering and contracting; HR and team development, management and leadership development program design and facilitation in core business and corporate areas for over 25 separate public sector agencies. She has provided similar services to the state governments in Tasmania, NSW and Victoria, and internationally in Indonesia, Viet Nam, Bangladesh, Macau and the United States. Her coaching clients have included senior public servants, CEOS, academics, health care providers, lawyers, police, entrepreneurs, and individuals involved in the arts.

Mark Thomann

Mark worked in the public and community sectors for over thirty years. In that time he led high performing teams with responsibilities as diverse as the social policy expenditure of the Federal Budget, Australian Government transport infrastructure investment, Indigenous health, hospital funding, aged and community care, and community housing.

Mark has applied strong people skills to getting results throughout his successful senior executive career. His coaching practice reflects his enthusiasm and interest in coaching people to achieve their best and focuses on new and emerging leaders, career transitions and working in cross-cultural contexts. He has a Certificate in Organisational Coaching (Level 1) from the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership.

Sarah Lowe

Sarah has spent the past 20 years building a successful career as a senior executive in the Talent Acquisition industry. Through her leadership experience, she has developed a passion for helping others build, grow and embrace their full potential. As a professional coach, Sarah partners with her clients to help them identify their goals, breaking down barriers and challenges, whilst facilitating learning and growth. She has a compassionate, positive coaching style, creating a productive coaching environment.

Don Lowe

Don has a strong reputation as a practical, highly engaging and effective Executive Coach, leadership and development specialist. His formal qualifications coupled with over 10 years’ experience coaching people and teams underpin adaptable approaches built on robust theoretical foundations. Don’s tailored approaches draw from a combination of theory, imagination and experience to build capability in individuals and teams, and organisations. Don has worked in consulting, developmental and coaching roles with individual and team clients from industries including state and federal public services, law enforcement, defence, business, fire and emergency services, recruitment, and regulatory services.
